Break It Down

To break down the solids that enter the tank, bacteria is needed. Naturally forming bacteria will feed on the organic solids that enter your tank, creating a natural waste-disposal process. However, it is possible to unintentionally starve these bacteria who only want to help the septic system process. The frequent use of chemical-based products can harm and even kill the bacteria in your septic tank. This is because they cannot devour such man-made products, and the presence of these chemicals can sweep across their numbers like a plague. So think before you use any of these items, examples listed below;

detergents bleach cleaning compounds
disinfectants acids sink & tub cleaners
toilet cleaners polishes caustic drain openers

A NOTE ABOUT YEAST
Many people believe that yeast is the key to an efficient septic system. The fact is yeast breaks down only carbohydrates and starches. Yeast will not break down fats, oils, grease, hair, or fibre, and it's action may stir up tank contents causing fine solids to escape into the tile bed.
